ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS. In many cases, soon after a new alternator has been installed, it is found to have failed prematurely. Because many of the new alternators are capable of charging at rates in excess of 110 amp, the battery should be fully charged or replace when is old or sulfated because is being discharged before use to avoid overcharging the by alternator by trying to use it like a battery charger. As well as supplying current for vehicle amenities. Symptoms of this type of damage are burnt stator. In many newer vehicles, the alternator is located in an area that allows very little ventilation. The area around the rectifier on the back of the alternator plugs up with dirt and fibers, causing the unit to overheat and fail. TEST THE ALTERNATOR BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY WITH ENGINE RUNNING. A battery acts like a voltage stabilizer or filter to the pulsating DC produced by the alternator. Disconnecting a battery while the engine is running could damage the sensitive electronic components connected to the electrical system such as the emission computer, radio, audio system, cell phone, alarms system, etc., or the charging system, especially with internal voltage regulator, because the peak voltage can rise to 40 volts or more. In the 1970s, removing a battery terminal was an accepted practice to test the charging system of the era. THAT'S IS NOT THE CASE TODAY. Static electricity and spikes from connecting and disconnecting batteries can damage sensitive electronics components.
